Nigeria’s military high command has sent a strong signal from the creeks of the Niger Delta: safeguard oil assets, uphold integrity, and reject compromise.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, on Thursday charged troops of the Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Safe (OPDS), to execute their mandate with professionalism and discipline, warning that misconduct in the oil-rich region carries national economic consequences.

Gen. Oluyede delivered the message during the commissioning of an ultra-modern Non-Commissioned Officers’ accommodation block and a remodelled conference hall at the Headquarters of JTF South-South Operation Delta Safe in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

Addressing officers and men, the CDS stressed that the task force’s core responsibility protecting oil and gas infrastructure is directly tied to Nigeria’s fiscal stability.

“You must discharge your duties with utmost professionalism and integrity,” he told the troops, cautioning against any form of illegal activity or operational compromise.

Oil and gas exports remain Nigeria’s primary foreign exchange earner. Persistent pipeline vandalism, crude theft, sea robbery and militancy in the Niger Delta have historically drained billions of dollars in lost revenue and disrupted production targets.

By reinforcing ethical conduct alongside operational readiness, defence authorities appear intent on restoring investor confidence in a region long viewed as volatile.

Beyond operational discipline, the CDS used the occasion to reaffirm his commitment to improving troop welfare across the Armed Forces.

He disclosed that enhanced welfare packages are currently being proposed, aimed at strengthening working conditions and overall well-being of personnel.

The newly commissioned accommodation facility, a 24-apartment complex reflects that strategic focus.

According to the Commander of JTF South-South Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Olugbenga Oladipo, the project was conceived under the CDS’ military strategic philosophy, which places troop welfare at the centre of operational effectiveness.

The apartments are equipped with 24-hour solar power supply, water facilities, beddings and cooling systems amenities designed to boost morale in a region known for harsh terrain and demanding deployments.

Boosting Morale, Securing Assets
Oladipo said prioritising welfare is essential to sustaining momentum in the task force’s mandate: protecting oil and gas installations, deterring militancy, combating sea robbery and safeguarding lives and property in the Niger Delta.

He thanked the CDS for commissioning the project and for sustaining institutional backing for troops deployed in high-risk operational theatres.

Security analysts note that improved accommodation and infrastructure within military formations are increasingly viewed as force multipliers reducing fatigue, enhancing discipline and reinforcing command cohesion.

The ceremony drew senior defence officials, including the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Emekah; the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command, represented by Air Vice Marshal J.J. Ijugigal; and the Commander 16 Brigade, Brigadier General Nurulhayat Mohammed, alongside principal staff officers from Defence Headquarters.

Their presence underscored the strategic importance of the Niger Delta theatre within Nigeria’s broader security framework.

For the defence establishment, Thursday’s commissioning was more than a ribbon-cutting event.

It was a symbolic assertion that welfare reform and operational integrity must go hand in hand if Nigeria is to secure its economic lifeline.

As global energy markets remain sensitive to supply disruptions, the message from Yenagoa was unambiguous: troop discipline is not just a military virtue, it is a national economic imperative.
