Nigeria has drawn a firm diplomatic line in the shifting geopolitics of the Horn of Africa, declaring unambiguous support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political unity of Somalia, while warning international actors against any move that could fracture the fragile state.

In a strongly worded statement issued from Abuja on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nigeria would not tolerate actions, rhetoric or recognitions that undermine Somalia’s constitutional order or carve out any part of its territory as an independent entity.

The declaration places Africa’s most populous nation squarely behind Mogadishu at a time when Somalia continues to battle insecurity, political fragility and competing regional interests.

“Nigeria’s position is firm and unequivocal,” the statement said, reaffirming adherence to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity as enshrined in the United Nations Charter and the African Union’s Constitutive Act.

Abuja explicitly recognised the Federal Government of Somalia as the sole legitimate authority representing the Somali people.

Beyond symbolism, the statement carries strategic weight. Nigerian diplomats described Somalia’s stability as a cornerstone of peace not just in the Horn of Africa, but across the wider continent, underscoring why Abuja views threats to Somali unity as a continental security concern.

The Ministry commended Somalia’s leadership for pressing ahead with peace-building, national reconciliation and institutional reforms despite persistent security and governance challenges.

Nigeria, it said, stands in solidarity with those efforts and condemns any attempt internal or external to weaken Somalia’s statehood.

In a pointed warning, Abuja urged regional and global actors to desist from recognising any breakaway territory within Somalia, cautioning that such moves would inflame tensions, deepen instability and reverse hard-won gains.

“Any action that undermines Somalia’s territorial integrity will only escalate the crisis,” the statement warned, framing external recognition of secessionist claims as reckless and destabilising.

Nigeria also signalled that its support would extend beyond rhetoric, pledging continued engagement through multilateral frameworks and international cooperation to help Somalia rebuild a stable, resilient and prosperous state.

The intervention reinforces Nigeria’s long-standing posture as a defender of African unity and constitutional order, and sends a clear diplomatic message: Somalia’s borders are not negotiable, and its sovereignty is not up for debate.

As geopolitical pressures mount in the Horn of Africa, Abuja’s stance adds weight to calls for restraint, respect for international law and collective responsibility in safeguarding one of the continent’s most strategic and vulnerable regions.
