Repeat of Muslim-Muslim ticket will bring down the nation – Sen. Smart

Senator representing Kogi West, Smart Adeyemi to present a private bill to ban same faith ticket in subsequent elections as controversy of Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), recorded a twist.

Adeyemi in a press conference at the National Assembly on Sunday to rally support for Tinubu Asiwaju and Senator Shettima, regretted that it was an oversight that the amendment was not effected in the current Electoral Act.

According to him, the amendment of the electoral act to outlaw same faith ticket will serve as a guide
against any oversight such as this in the future as further occurrences will be deemed as silent policies which will be capable of bringing down the fabrics of the nation.

The lawmaker said in proposing the amendment, he had fully consulted the leadership of the Senate, believed that preventing same faith ticket will guarantee fairness, justice unity, national cohesion and peace in the country.

He advised that same faith ticket issue should not be allowed to worsen the security, political and religious tension the the country.

“For me as a States man, I owe
myself the responsibility to speak the truth at all times irrespective of mischievous misinterpretations.

“For the purposes of unity, we must balance up our diversity to a large extent. And it is in view of this
that I am making some proposals. I have had discussions with the leadership of the Senate, my
party leadership and a good number of Senators” he said

Adeyemi’s bill for the amendment of the 2022 Electoral Act which he released shows that section 84 of the Act should be amended by inserting a new subsection (3) as follows “No political Party shall nominate candidates of the same religion as Presidential candidate and Vice Presidential candidate”

He also advised that all the issues raised against same faith ticket “must not be confronted in such a manner that will obstruct the fabric of our national unity, peace and Stability which we have all fought very hard to keep.”

“Yes, there have been oversights in key appointments in the past, which tends to keep the Christians at a disadvantage and this has caused apprehension amongst us” He admitted.

The lawmaker who however pleaded with Nigerians to elect the APC Presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Ibrahim Shettima, advised that consideration should not be given to parties in the 2023 election.
