A political tsunami is about to hit Enugu State as Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah prepares to officially defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, a move expected to redraw the Southeast’s political map and end the state’s decade-long stay in opposition.
The bombshell announcement came Friday at the APC National Secretariat, Abuja on Friday, during a press briefing by the newly inaugurated Enugu State Caretaker Committee, led by Dr. Ben Nwoye.
Speaking moments after his inauguration, Nwoye described the governor’s impending defection as “a merger between transformation and renewed hope,” declaring it the dawn of a new political order in Enugu and the Southeast.
“For the past ten years, Enugu State has remained in opposition. But all that ends on Tuesday when Governor Peter Mbah declares for the APC. And he is not coming alone,” Nwoye thundered.
According to him, the defection will be a “historic alignment” as Mbah will be joined by 260 councilors, 24 state lawmakers, National Assembly members, and the entire state executive council, signaling a total political realignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Where Enugu goes, the Southeast goes,” Nwoye said confidently. “This marks the beginning of the Southeast’s political reawakening and full integration into national politics.”
Nwoye praised Governor Mbah’s performance, saying his economic and infrastructural reforms had already catapulted Enugu into Nigeria’s top five states in internally generated revenue.
“In less than two years, Governor Mbah has moved Enugu from a lagging state to a front-runner,” Nwoye said. “Today, Enugu ranks fifth nationwide in IGR, proof of visionary leadership.”
He explained that Mbah’s Transformation Agenda and Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Vision would now fuse to accelerate regional growth.
“This is a merger of progress and purpose,” he noted. “Together, Mbah and Tinubu will fast-track development in the Southeast.”
When asked what attracted Governor Mbah to the APC, Nwoye pointed to the economic revival under Tinubu’s leadership, which he said has doubled allocations to states, empowering them to invest massively in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
“Enugu now boasts 260 smart green schools, 260 healthcare centres, and 260 farm estates across all wards,” Nwoye revealed. “Industries are springing up, and the state is now hosting national events like the NBA conference. This progress is tied to President Tinubu’s economic reforms.”
The Caretaker Chairman said the committee had launched an aggressive grassroots mobilization campaign to consolidate the party’s momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We have started political evangelism, uniting all factions, no suspensions, no expulsions. Every vote counts,” he said. “With the governor’s defection, APC will dominate Enugu and reclaim its strength across the Southeast.”
Recalling that the APC once registered over 160,000 members in Enugu, Nwoye expressed optimism that the defection wave would transform those numbers into electoral victory in 2027.
Addressing questions on the dissolution of the former State Executive, Nwoye clarified that the decision was not punitive but strategic.
“When you drive by looking at your rear-view mirror, you crash. We are not looking back, our focus is on delivering Enugu and the Southeast to the center,” he asserted.
The Caretaker Chairman concluded by thanking the APC National Working Committee and President Tinubu for their confidence in the new team.
“Our mission is clear to consolidate, unite, and position Enugu at the heart of national politics. With Governor Mbah’s entry, the Southeast will finally take its rightful place in Nigeria’s power equation,” he declared.
