The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist and former Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the defunct National Concord, Dr. Doyin Abiola, describing her as a trailblazing figure and a true “amazon of Nigerian journalism.”

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Speaker Abbas paid glowing tribute to the late media icon, who passed away at the age of 82.

Dr. Abiola, one of the wives of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election was widely respected as the first woman to hold the position of editor-in-chief of a national daily newspaper in Nigeria.

Her journalism career spanned over three decades and broke significant gender barriers in the media landscape.

“Dr. Doyin Abiola was a trailblazer, an inspiring woman who paved the way for many others in a male-dominated field. Her contributions to journalism and to the development of the Nigerian media are monumental,” Speaker Abbas stated.

He described her as a remarkable professional whose legacy would continue to inspire generations of journalists and women in leadership.

The Speaker extended his condolences to the Abiola family, her former colleagues at Daily Sketch, Daily Times, and National Concord, and the wider media community in Nigeria.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of her soul and asked God to grant the family and all who mourn her the strength to bear the loss.
