The Presidency has responded to claims made by Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State, regarding President Bola Tinubu’s role in the June 12 struggle.
According to the Special Adviser to the President, Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga in a press statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, Lamido alleged that Tinubu supported the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election and only rose to prominence after the formation of NADECO.
President Tinubu condemned the annulment on the Senate floor on August 19, 1993, describing it as another coup d’état and urging Nigerians to reject injustice and lawlessness.
Tinubu played a leading role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a broad coalition of Nigerian democrats that called on the military government to step down in favor of the winner of the June 12 election, MKO Abiola.
Lamido, as secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), failed to oppose the military’s injustice and surrendered the people’s mandate without resistance.
The Presidency has emphasized that President Tinubu was a steadfast advocate for democracy during the June 12 struggle, in contrast to Lamido’s record of capitulation in the face of military oppression and intimidation.
The statement concludes that Lamido’s claims are a distortion of history and an attempt at revisionism.
