President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a two-year extension of the tenure of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (SGF), Mr. AbuduGaniyu Adebomehin, in a move aimed at consolidating ongoing reforms within Nigeria’s geospatial and land management systems.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the extension which takes effect from January 5, 2026 was necessitated by the recent transfer of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) toà the Presidency.
The President, the statement noted, has expressed satisfaction with Adebomehin’s performance and is keen to see the reform blueprint for national land administration, data mapping, and infrastructure coordination reach full execution.
“The President expects Mr. Adebomehin to consolidate ongoing reforms within the next two years,” Onanuga stated.
“These include critical initiatives in national land management, highway and abutting land infrastructure coordination, reclamation and erosion control programmes, and other strategic areas of national importance.”
The decision, seen as a vote of confidence in Adebomehin’s leadership, aligns with Tinubu’s broader agenda to digitize Nigeria’s geospatial infrastructure, improve urban planning, and strengthen disaster response systems through accurate land and data mapping.
Adebomehin, who has championed modernization efforts within OSGOF, is credited with introducing advanced geospatial data systems, digital survey technologies, and inter-agency collaboration models that have improved the precision and reliability of Nigeria’s national maps.
Presidency sources hinted that the decision also reflects Tinubu’s determination to stabilize technical agencies now under the Presidency’s purview, ensuring reform projects are completed without disruption to national planning continuity.
With the extension, Adebomehin is now expected to drive the completion of Nigeria’s new digital mapping and land database system, a cornerstone of the administration’s economic diversification and infrastructure development agenda.
