Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar (OON), on Saturday represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at Liberia’s 178th Independence Day celebrations, reaffirming Nigeria’s enduring commitment to pan-African solidarity and regional cooperation.
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu during the ceremony in Monrovia, Ambassador Tuggar joined African dignitaries and international delegations in celebrating Liberia’s democratic journey, resilience, and aspirations for a united future.
The Minister delivered a goodwill message highlighting the deep historical and diplomatic bonds between Nigeria and Liberia.
“President Tinubu reiterates Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to partnering with Liberia through the ECOWAS framework to promote peace, economic cooperation, and collective security that benefit all citizens of our respective nations,” Tuggar said.
Reflecting on Liberia’s history, the Minister paid tribute to the sacrifices made by Nigerians under the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG), which played a critical role in ending Liberia’s civil war.
“In Liberia’s darkest hours, Nigeria answered the call of brotherhood,” he said. “Under the banner of ECOWAS, our soldiers, doctors, and diplomats came not as conquerors but as kin. Many never returned, their lives were given so that Liberia might live. Today, as we see peace blossom across Liberia, we honour their sacrifice.”
Tuggar emphasized that Nigeria and Liberia, as two of Africa’s pioneering sovereign nations, share a common legacy in championing democracy, regional integration, and African unity.
He stressed that the current global challenges including climate change, economic inequality, and political instability can be overcome through African collaboration and unity.
“Liberia and Nigeria are more than neighbours; we are family,” he declared.
This year’s Independence Day theme, “One People, One Destiny: Healing the Past and Building the Future,” focused on national reconciliation, unity, and the vision for a stronger Liberia. The celebrations highlighted the country’s progress and the continuing need for introspection and inclusive development.
In recognition of Nigeria’s historic support, especially during Liberia’s conflict years, President Joseph Boakai presented an official honour to Ambassador Tuggar on behalf of President Tinubu and the Nigerian people.
The symbolic gesture underscored Liberia’s deep appreciation for Nigeria’s peacekeeping role and consistent solidarity.
The visit reinforced Nigeria’s strategic diplomatic ties in West Africa and its leadership role in promoting peace and development across the region.
