Nigeria is gearing up to welcome the King’s Baton Relay, a significant tradition of the Commonwealth Games, as part of the official countdown to the 2026 Games.
According to Dr (mrs) kehinde Ajayi FCAI, the Director press, National Sports Commission (NSC).
June 30, 2025 in a press statement made available to newsmen in Abuja informed that the event is scheduled to take place in Abuja on July 1-2, 2025.
She noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be formally presented with the Commonwealth Sport King’s Baton by a delegation from Buckingham Palace.
kehinde mentioned that the event symbolizes peace, collaboration, and shared values among nations.
She said the King’s Baton Relay will also highlight the “Commonwealth Clean Oceans Plastics Campaign,” a partnership between the Commonwealth Sport movement, the Royal Commonwealth Society, and Nigeria’s National Sports Commission.
The campaign aimed to:
– Prevent one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters.
– Inspire behavioral change and innovation in waste solutions.
– Raise awareness about ocean conservation.
The event brings together athletes, young people, and communities across the Commonwealth to address the global crisis of plastic pollution.
Through sport and social action, the campaign seeks to create a lasting impact and promote a cleaner, healthier environment.
