Grief swept through the naval hierarchy yesterday as the Nigerian Navy confirmed the death of its Chief of Operations at Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Musa Bello Katagum.

The senior officer, regarded as one of the service’s key operational strategists in recent years, died after a prolonged illness and has been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Naval Headquarters announced the passing in an official statement, describing Katagum as a central figure behind several recent operational successes of the Navy.

Officers, ratings and civilian personnel across formations were said to have received the news with deep sorrow, with colleagues remembering him as a disciplined commander and respected leader.

He served as Chief of Operations, a position considered the nerve centre of naval deployments, maritime security planning and coordinated missions nationwide.

The Navy said his service was defined by professionalism, strategic foresight and loyalty to duty.

Throughout his career, he contributed to operational planning and execution in efforts aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain and strengthening national security.

Senior officers noted that his leadership style emphasised precision, discipline and mission clarity qualities they say inspired younger personnel across the service.

In the statement, the naval leadership expressed collective mourning and extended condolences to his family, friends and associates.

His legacy, the service said, would continue to guide officers and men in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The Navy prayed for the repose of his soul, describing his passing as a profound loss to the armed forces and the nation.
