The Defence Headquarters (DHQ ) has rolled out a sweeping, multi-layered security operation across Nigeria, signalling an uncompromising stance against any attempt to disrupt the Christmas festivities.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the military disclosed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), in close coordination with sister security agencies, have intensified operations in areas assessed as vulnerable, deploying additional troop’s to strategic locations, highways and population centres nationwide.

According to Defence Headquarters, the build-up is not symbolic.

Special Forces units have been placed on high alert, while air assets are standing by to deliver rapid-response support wherever threats emerge.

The objective, officials say, is clear: deny criminal and terrorist elements any operational window during the festive season.

Beyond boots on the ground, surveillance has been sharply escalated.

Aerial monitoring, intelligence collection and analysis of communication patterns linked to suspected criminal networks are now operating at heightened levels.

Unit commanders across all theatres have been directed to expand patrols, fortify checkpoints and tighten coordination with local vigilante groups, community leaders and state-backed security outfits.

Military sources describe the approach as preventive rather than reactive aimed at detecting and neutralising threats before they materialise.

“This is about staying ahead of those who seek to exploit crowds, travel and celebration,” one senior officer noted.

As churches, markets and transport corridors prepare for increased traffic, the Armed Forces reaffirmed that the protection of lives and property remains their overriding priority.

The Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians that all necessary measures are in place to ensure the season is marked by peace, unity and safety.

The military, however, stressed that security is a shared responsibility. Citizens have been urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security formation. Authorities assured the public that all intelligence provided will be treated with urgency and confidentiality.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa Oluyede, through the statement, extended Christmas and New Year greetings to Nigerians, expressing confidence that sustained cooperation between the military and the public will secure a peaceful festive period.

The message from Abuja is unmistakable: this Christmas, the security net is tight, the watch is constant, and the Armed Forces are on full alert.
