The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has thrown down a clear challenge to its members as 2026 begins: raise the bar, protect the truth, and close ranks in the face of mounting pressure on the media industry.

In a New Year message that blended reflection with resolve, NUJ FCT Chairman, Grace Ike, saluted journalists for standing firm through what she described as a demanding and defining year, one that tested both professional integrity and personal resilience.

The outgoing year, she noted, was no gentle ride. Yet, despite economic strain, shrinking newsroom resources and an increasingly hostile information environment, journalists in the FCT “stood firm,” continuing to uphold the ideals of the profession with courage and commitment.

As the calendar turns, Ike said the New Year brings not comfort, but greater responsibility.

Journalists, she stressed, remain the conscience of society and custodians of truth at a time when democracy, public trust and national cohesion depend heavily on credible reporting.

In an era flooded by misinformation and deliberate falsehoods, she warned that the cost of ethical failure has never been higher.

Looking ahead, the NUJ FCT Council is positioning 2026 as a year of renewed vigour and strategic focus.

According to Ike, the leadership will intensify efforts around members’ welfare, professional development and internal unity, while pushing harder for improved working conditions, stronger institutional backing and expanded capacity-building opportunities.

“Our members must be empowered to thrive in a rapidly evolving media landscape,” she said, signalling a more assertive advocacy posture by the Council.

Ethical journalism, Ike made clear, will remain non-negotiable.

Accuracy, fairness, balance and integrity, she said, must guide every report, especially as public trust in media institutions faces sustained assault.

Beyond professionalism, the Chairman placed strong emphasis on solidarity, describing unity as the Council’s greatest asset.

A stronger NUJ, she said, is one that listens, supports and protects its members while creating space for excellence to flourish.

Her message to journalists entering the New Year was both a call to action and a caution: embrace innovation, but never at the expense of values; pursue progress, but without surrendering principles.

As 2026 opens, the NUJ FCT Council is framing the year not as a reset into comfort, but as a renewed mission to serve the public interest with courage, credibility and collective strength.

Ike concluded by wishing members and their families a peaceful and prosperous New Year, expressing optimism that the months ahead will deliver good health, professional fulfilment and shared success for the Council.

For journalists in the nation’s capital, the message was unmistakable: the stakes are higher, the spotlight is brighter, and the work ahead will demand nothing less than the best of the profession.
