The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Saturday positioned troop unity and morale as frontline weapons in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, insurgency and banditry, declaring that a motivated force is as decisive as battlefield firepower.

Speaking as Chief host at the Army Headquarters West African Social Activities (WASA) 2025 held at the Mogadishu Cantonment parade ground, Abuja, the Army chief said the colourful military tradition has evolved into a structured operational strategy aimed at strengthening combat effectiveness.

Shaibu explained that the annual gathering now forms a core part of the “Robust Administration” pillar of his command philosophy, a deliberate welfare-driven system designed to reinforce esprit de corps and sustain fighting efficiency across theatres of operation.

“A united and well-motivated force is better positioned to confront emerging threats,” the COAS declared, stressing that troop welfare, cohesion and family support are now embedded components of operational readiness.

The Army Chief disclosed that new welfare policies and institutional reforms are being implemented to entrench a “Soldier First” culture, ensuring troops remain resilient, disciplined and psychologically prepared for prolonged operations nationwide.

According to him, improving living conditions and strengthening family support structures are no longer ceremonial obligations but operational necessities in modern warfare.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to joint operations with other security agencies, noting that coordinated action remains essential to defeating asymmetric threats.

Earlier, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Major General Henry Wesley (Rtd), described unity within the armed forces as Nigeria’s strongest strategic advantage.

He said the military mirrors Nigeria’s diversity yet operates under a single mission objective protecting national sovereignty.

“In confronting complex security threats, unity remains our most potent strategic asset,” he stated, praising troops for discipline and patriotism across operational theatres.

Commander Army Headquarters Garrison, Major General Maxwell Dangana, described WASA as a critical bonding platform promoting mutual respect among soldiers and their families.

He revealed the Army recorded notable operational, administrative and logistics gains in 2025, supported by sustained training aligned with battlefield priorities.

The ceremony featured traditional dances, beating of retreat and the ceremonial bonfire long-standing symbols of collective resolve within military culture.

Security analysts view the messaging as deliberate: projecting internal cohesion while reassuring the public of institutional stability amid evolving security challenges.

The Army leadership also acknowledged support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and defence authorities for operational direction and strategic backing.

But beneath the drums and spectacle, the doctrine was unmistakable morale, welfare and unity are now treated as battlefield assets.

For a nation confronting multiple security fronts, the Army’s message was blunt: victory may depend as much on cohesion within the ranks as on weapons in the field.
