In a major boost to Nigeria’s humanitarian response, the United States Government has committed $32.5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to provide urgent food and nutrition assistance to vulnerable families displaced by conflict in the Northeast and Northwest.

The intervention will reach 764,205 beneficiaries, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), host communities, and returnees struggling with hunger and malnutrition.

According to WFP Nigeria, the package also includes nutrition top-ups for 41,569 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, and 43,235 children, delivered through electronic food vouchers to ensure dignity, choice, and transparency in access to life-saving food.

“This contribution from the U.S. Government comes at a critical time when millions of Nigerians face rising food insecurity,” a WFP spokesperson said.

“It will enable us to sustain families in conflict-hit areas while protecting women and children from the devastating impact of malnutrition.”

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria described the funding as part of Washington’s enduring commitment to strengthening humanitarian response in Africa’s most populous nation.

“No one should go to bed hungry. The United States is proud to stand with Nigeria in addressing hunger and malnutrition, especially among the most vulnerable, women, children, and those displaced by conflict,” the Mission noted.

Humanitarian experts say the funding is a lifeline as Nigeria grapples with protracted insurgency in the Northeast, worsening banditry in the Northwest, and a cost-of-living crisis that has pushed millions closer to starvation.

The WFP reaffirmed that it will continue to work closely with partners and the Nigerian government to scale up assistance and build resilience in the hardest-hit communities.
