Police Games: Force Headquarters Abuja Win Gold in Swimming Competition

Miss Oluchi Obi of Force Headquarters, Abuja, has won Gold in a two hundred female category freestyle swimming competition that took place at the newly constructed swimming pool at Doctor Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, Anambra State.

Others, including Yvonne Oki of Zone Two and Jemine Ebierinba of Zone Eleven won Silver and Bronze respectively.

Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Emeka Ezenwanne, who addressed newsmen at the poolside, said the facilities will enable more people develop and advance interest in sports, thanking Governor Obiano for delivering the project in record time.

Swimming competition in the 2020 Police Games holding in Anambra State is underway this Friday morning at the new swimming facility at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.

While inspecting the facility Governor Willie Obiano in the company of the Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission, Mr. Tony Oli assured the athletes and Ndi Anambra that the facility will be ready. The governor praised all who worked day and night to ensure that the facility was ready.

“The swimming pool for the 2020 Police Games was constructed in under 3 weeks. This shows our commitment as a government and our resilience as a people. The Police games have been exciting so far for all the participants, our visitors, Ndi Anambra and even small businesses and hotels.

“New friendships have been made and i believe these will endure. I am proud and happy at the same time that we have been variously called perfect hosts by our visitors. It gladdens my heart that once again, we have been able to exhibit the Anambra hospitality that we are known for”, Governor Obiano said.

Mr. Tony Oli on his part thanked the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the wonderful job they have done. According to him, “The ultimate beneficiaries of the various new facilities Anambra state government has put in place for the 2020 Police Games are Ndi Anambra.

“Our sports men and women now have various new facilities including swimming pool, basketball, handball and volleyball courts etc where they can train. These will improve our chances of winning more medals at national and even international sports competitions”.

The closing ceremony of the week-long 2020 Police Games takes place on Saturday, 7th March 2020 by 12 noon at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka. Several music acts, dance groups and masquerades will perform and all are invited.

The Secretary to Anambra State Government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu calls on traditional rulers, Presidents General of Town Unions, market men and women, the clergy, students, members of civil society organisations, members of various social, cultural and political associations, youth leaders and Ndi Anambra to come out in great numbers for the closing ceremony.

“We started the 2020 Police Games with a loud bang and in style. It will be nice to also end it gloriously. We want our people to come out and have fun”.
